MYP 8.6.5: Home-made indicator


  • To know that indicators are made from vegetable dyes
  • To prepare a pH indicator from either red cabbage, beetroot, etc..



The students could be encouraged to try a range of fruits and vegetables. The basic procedure is the same. Boil the fruit up in a limited amount of water to extract the colour.
Test samples of the solution prepared using acids identified from the previous experiment, or the table on page 107.
