Unit 10.7.1: Preparing and testing for gases

Objectives

  • To prepare some common gases and test them
  • To be able to work safely with toxic gases

Introduction

Data search by students for the properties of six gases:

  • Hydrogen
  • Oxygen
  • Ammonia
  • Sulfur(IV) oxide
  • Chlorine
  • Carbon dioxide

Student follow up

Gas preparation and testing circus. Six stations around the room. Chlorine to be carried out in the fume hood.

Experimental procedure

Assessment

None

Teaching notes

The hydrogen peroxide should be about 10 vol.

The order in which the tests are carried out is important as the flame tests may use up the gas and prevent a successful indicator test.
