Investigation of physical and chemical change
EXPERIMENT 1
1. Place a small spatula of iodine crystals into the boiling tube
2. Warm GENTLY with a very small bunsen flame.
3. Observe
4. Dis-assemble the apparatus and reassemble it with clean tubes ready
for the next group.
EXPERIMENT 2
1. Place a spatula of sulphur into a test tube.
2. Warm GENTLY with a small bunsen flame
3. Observe
EXPERIMENT 3
1. Measure out 10 cm3 of sulphuric acid into a test tube.
2. Add a piece of magnesium ribbon
3. Observe
4. Carefully wash the tube out with plenty of water and a test tube brush.
EXPERIMENT 4
1. Add a spatula of magnesium sulphate crystals to a small beaker of water
(50ml)
2. Stir with a stirrer
3. Observe
EXPERIMENT 5
1. Measure out 5cm3 of lead nitrate solution into a test tube
2. Measure out 5cm3 of potassium iodide solution into a second test tube.
3. Add the contents of both test tubes together.
4. Observe
5. Carefully wash the tubes out with plenty of water and a test tube brush.
EXPERIMENT 6
1. Measure out 10cm3 of sulphuric acid into a test tube
2. Add a spatula of copper carbonate
3. Observe
4. Carefully wash the tube out with plenty of water and a test tube brush.
EXPERIMENT 7
1. Using a pair of tongs, hold a piece of magnesium ribbon in a bunsen
flame.
2. When it sets on fire hold it above a heat proof mat.
3. Observe
EXPERIMENT 8
1. Hold an iron nail in a hot bunsen flame for about 1 minute
2. Observe any changes
3. Place the nail on a heat proof mat to cool down.
