MYP-8: Laboratory work

Expt: Preparation of sodium chloride by neutralisation

Safety features:

The chemicals used in this experiment are corrosive and hazardous.
Suitable safety precautions must be taken - safety glasses and care.
In the event of a spillage or skin contact wash the affected area with plenty of water.

Instructions

1. Fill a burette up to the 0 cm3 mark with dilute hydrochloric acid .

2. Transfer 25cm3 of sodium hydroxide to a 250cm3 conical flask and add 5 drops of indicator.

3. Add the acid a little at a time until the colour changes to neutral (this depends on the indicator)

4. Repeat a second time to get a more accurate result. Record the quantities of acid and base used.

5. Now, without using indicator, mix exactly the same quantities of acid and base in a conical flask.

6. Evaporate the resultant solution in an evaporating basin. If you have time you can use a water bath.
