Action of heat on cobalt II chloride

Instructions:

Part I

  1. Place one spatula of cobalt II chloride in a dry test tube.
  2. Heat gently at first and then strongly until no further change occurs.
  3. Allow to cool and and add a few drops of water to the COOL residue.

Part II

  1. Make up a strong solution of cobalt chloride by dissolving 3 spatulas of cobalt chloride in 5 cm3 of water.
  2. Dip a piece of filter paper into the solution and dry it out over a hot gauze (too hot and it will char the filter paper)
  3. Observe the change in the paper. Dip the paper into some water - observe again
