MYP 8 Science - Chemistry

MYP 8.6.1: Making soap

Introduction

Soap was probably discovered from the ashes left over after cooking meat over an open fire. The fat drips off the meat and the ashes contain potassium hydroxide. When rainwater is mixed with this it makes soap.

Objectives:

  • To know that soap has been around for thousands of years
  • To know that soap is made by breaking down fatty acids
  • To use strong alkali safely
  • To follow through an experimental procedure safely
