MYP 7 Science - Chemistry

MYP 7.4.2: Oxygen

Preparation, properties and test.

Objectives:

  • To know that oxygen is an important component of air and that it can be prepared by chemical reaction
  • To prepare a sample of oxygen by decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
  • To test oxygen by relighting a glowing splint
  • Know that oxygen supports combustion
  • Know that without oxygen fuels cannot burn.
  • Know that oxidising agents often provide oxygen to assist combustion

Teacher Demo

Plunge glowing iron wool into a gas jar of oxygen (safety screen) using a deflagrating spoon.

Repeat using a small amount of burning sulphur (fume-hood). Add a small amount of water, shake and add universal indicator solution.

Repeat using a small amount of glowing charcoal (fume-hood). Add a small amount of water, shake and add universal indicator solution.

Video - Screaming jelly baby (reaction between a jelly baby and potassium chlorate(V))

The gas jars of oxygen should be prepared prior to the class.

Student Activity

Prepare a sample of oxygen gas using a side-arm tube, hydrogen peroxide and manganese(IV) oxide

Collect over water and fill up several tubes

Test with:

a) damp universal indicator paper

b) glowing splint
