MYP 7 Science - Chemistry

MYP 7.4.0: Introduction - Living in the material world

Objectives:

  • To know that the air is a mixture of gases with fairly constant proportions
  • To understand that carbon dioxide is variable and appears to be increasing
  • To know the sources of carbon dioxide and oxygen
  • To understand the link between industry and carbon dioxide
  • To know the sources of pollutant gases in the atmosphere
  • To understand the theoretical connection between greenhouse gases and global warming
  • To know that methane and water vapour are major contributors to global warming
  • To know how to manipulate gases in the laboratory
  • To know how to prepare gases in the laboratory
  • To know how to test for oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and chlorine in the laboratory
  • To know that the sea is a solution of salts leached from the land
  • To know that sea salt is predominantly sodium chloride.
  • To understand that sodium chloride can be broken down to sodium and chlorine by electrolysis
  • To know that hydrogen is also formed by electrolysis of salt water.
