MYP 6 Science - Chemistry

MYP 6.2.7: Evaluative practical - investigate the solubility of salt in water

Objectives

  • To plan and carry out a fair test on the solubility of salt
  • To write up the experiment

Introduction

Salt dissolves in water to make a salt solution.

Possible variables:

  • Time required to dissolve
  • Stirring
  • Temperature
  • Mass of salt
  • Volume of water

The experiment has several layers of sophistication.

The mass dissolved can be found by evaporating samples of the solution. If the same volume of solution is sampled each time then solubility can be compared.
