MYP 6.1.7: Evaluative practical

What affects the temperature change when a sample of citric acid solution is mixed with a sample of sodium hydroxide solution?

Objectives:

  • To plan and carry out a fair test to follow the temperature of a mixture
  • To write up the experiment

Introduction

The reaction between citric acid and sodium hydroxide releases heat energy. The citric acid must first be dissolved in water. The sodium hydroxide solution is provided by the teacher.

The reaction can be followed using a thermometer or temperature probe.

Possible variables:

  • Time of reaction
  • Volume of either solution
  • Mass of citric acid used to make the solution
