Unit 10.6.4: The effect of concentration on the initial reaction rate

Objectives

  • To carry out an experiment to find the effect of concentration on the initial rate of a reaction
  • To use the skills learned in previous experiments to carry out a safe and logical experiment
  • To determine rates of reaction graphically
  • To explain the results using collision theory

Introduction

The students have carried out an experiment using the collection of gas method.

They are to plan an experiment to find out the effect of concentration on the rate of the reaction between sulfuric acid and magnesium.

Student experiment

The students are provided with 1 mol dm-3 sulfuric acid and a length of magnesium ribbon.
