MYP 10

Unit 10.4.6 - Endothermic processes

  • To understand that some changes proceed with absorption of heat energy
  • To introduce the concept of entropy as a universal phenomenon
  • To measure energy change in some endothermic processes
  • To understand and use the definition of enthalpy of solution

Class activity

The class is provided with samples of the following salts:

  • Ammonium chloride
  • Ammonium carbonate
  • Ammonium sulfate
  • Sodium chloride

They are to write out the formula of each with its relative mass (taking into account water of crystallisation if necessary)

They are to dissolve known masses of each in samples of water in a polystyrene beaker, recording before and after temperature.

Extension activity (requires lots of crushed ice and sodium chloride)

Competition between groups to find the best proportions of ice/water/salt* for the coldest temperature. (*sodium chloride)
