MYP 10

Unit 10.1.6 - Displacement of copper(II) ions from solution

  • To measure the energy change of a redox reaction
  • To compensate for cooling using back extrapolation

Class activity

Calorimetry of the reaction between copper(II) sulfate and zinc powder.

Student follow up

Experiment report with graphical back-extrapolation and enthalpy calculation

No assessment

Teaching notes

The experiment can be extended by reacting the copper(II) sulfate with magnesium powder (care). The vigour of the reaction depends on the concentration of the copper ions.

Suggested range of concentrations 0.5 - 2.0 mol dm-3
